The fastest 16-star completion of Super Mario 64 (Nintendo, 1996) using a drum kit as a controller is 19 minutes and 48 seconds, set by Cesar “CZR” (USA) on 9 December 2022 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
CZR finally sped past the 20 minute mark after two-and-a-half years of trying. It's a time made all the more impressive when you consider the world record 16-star completion of Super Mario 64 is just five minutes faster.
CZR uses a TD-17KVX electronic drum kit to send input signals to his childhood Nintendo 64 console to speedrun videogames in the "drum%" category. He began streaming his bizarre obsession in May 2020, working hard to shave precious seconds off his best Super Mario 64 time. But he has set a number of drum% world records: in June 2020, CZR completed The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo, 1998) in under 30 minutes using his drums. In May 2022, he completed Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo, 1985) with a drum kit in just five minutes and 55 seconds. In a tweet, CZR called the sub-20 minute completion of Mario 64 his “proudest record to date”.
