The most southerly Summer Olympic Games were the Games of the XVI Olympiad held in Melbourne, Australia – located at 37.5º latitude and 144.6º longitude – from 22 November to 8 December 1956.
Melbourne was the first Summer Olympics to be held in the Southern Hemisphere and to date the only other southern Olympics were the Sydney Games in 2000.
In 2016 they will be held in the Southern Hemisphere for the third time, with Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, selected as the hosts.
